Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi was a veteran Congress leader and former Union minister. A member of the 14th Lok Sabha he represented the Raiganj (Lok Sabha constituency) of West Bengal.
Dasmunsi began his political career as a member of Indian National Congress. President of Indian Youth Congress in West Bengal from 1970 to 1971, he entered Parliament in 1971. In 1985 he was sworn in as Union Minister of State, Commerce. A member of Parliament from 1999 to 2009, Dasmunsi was known for his strong anti-Left credentials. A prominent face of Congress in West Bengal he served as the union minister of parliamentary affairs and the minister of information and broadcasting from 2004 to 2008, during the first term of the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government. Also a sports lover, he served as the President of the All India Football Federation for almost 20 years.
Illness & Death
Mr. Dasmunsi suffered a massive stroke and paralysis in October 2008 and slipped to comatose. Even after various rounds of treatments he did not recover much. He was unable to speak or recognize anyone. His political mantle was handed to his wife Deepa.His condition deteriorated after he developed chest infection which further worsened his condition.He died on 20th November 2017 at New Delhi, India. He is survived by his wife Deepa Dasmunsi and a son Priyadeep Dasmunshi.
